GB Women U18 1-7 Hungary Women U18

Great Britain Under-18 Women opened up their international tournament at Ice Sheffield with a 7-1 defeat by Hungary.

This was a massive test for the GB youngsters against a side who were only relegated from the Elite level in 2014.

Hungary took the lead at 4:11 as Hanna Gaitz tipped in a shot from Fruzsina Mayer and it was 2-0 at 13:52 when Orsolya Varadi reacted first on the doorstep to a loose puck.

GB made an excellent start to the second period and after Abbie Culshaw went close, Chloe Matthews scored through the five-hole to close the gap (24:32).

Hungary regained their two-goal advantage 50 seconds later through Hanna Pinter (25:22), before Culshaw was denied short-handed.

In the third period, Jessica Urquhart went close with a great burst of speed but Petra Pavuk netted on a delayed penalty from the left circle at 43:47.

A great piece of skill from Pinter through the middle saw her grab her second and Hungary’s fifth of the night (49:02) and Pavuk scored her second at 58:38.

Pinter completed her hat-trick 39 seconds later (59:17) to complete a memorable personal night.

Assistant coach James Ashton said: “This tournament was never about going out and winning every game.
“It is about getting the players ready for World Championship ice hockey.

“They all worked really hard and every girl came off the ice frustrated.

“But what they can do is take that into our next game agaisnt Spain.”

Earlier in the day, Spain and Poland ended 0-0 before the Spanish won in the sudden-death shootout.
