GB Women U18 1-6 Spain Women U18

Great Britain Under-18 Women’s second game in the international tournament at Ice Sheffield ended in defeat as they were beaten 6-1 by Spain.

Spain took the lead on a five-on-three powerplay when Leyre Vilar Toro reacted first to a loose puck at 12:57 and then with a one-player advantage, they grabbed their second 51 seconds later through Tamara Grande Ruano’s deflected shot (13:48).

GB netminder Emily Cole made two point-blank saves at the start of the second period to keep the deficit down at two, before GB fought their way back into the game through Lucy Gruber’s backhand shot at 26:20.

But Ainoha Merino’s excellent top-shelf finish saw Spain reopen their two-goal lead at 29:35 and Eva Marqués netted the fourth (34:35) with a neat near-side shot, which promoted GB to call their timeout.

Leticia Abrisquesta scored Spain’s fifth at the backdoor at 41:15 while at the other end, Gruber twice came close to a second goal following great pieces of skill through the middle.

Vega Muñoz Delgado netted short-handed at 55:48 to complete the scoring.

Earlier, Poland beat Hungary 1-0 in the day’s first game.
