GB Women name captaincy team for World Championship

Great Britain Women have confirmed their captaincy team for the IIHF World Championship which gets under way in Maribor tomorrow.

Leanne Ganney will once again captain the side with Saffron Allen and Lauren Summers appointed as alternate captains.

GB begin the Division II Group A tournament tomorrow against Australia, before facing North Korea, Mexico, Slovenia and Netherlands.

Ganney said: “The first thing is always to wear the GB shirt and to have the captaincy on top is amazing.

“I love leading these girls and I hope the feeling is mutual. They are such a great group of girls, so they make my life easy.

“Team spirit is so important. It helps with chemistry on the ice, in the dressing room, everywhere, so it is really, really important.”

GB go head-to-head with Australia tomorrow for the fifth time since 2005, with Britain winning three of the previous meetings and Australia one.

Britain arrived in Maribor on Thursday and have already had two training sessions – and Ganney revealed spirits are high in the camp.

“The feeling is really good,” continued Ganney. “Everyone is getting on and the vibe is really good.

“Everyone is happy and we can take that into tomorrow and it should be good.”

GB and Australia face-off at 1pm tomorrow (12noon UK time).
