World Championship GB Milestones

This years World Championships have seen a number of player milestones with Jackson Whistle and Brett Perlini both winning their 50th caps, Robert Dowd and GB GM Andy Buxton reaching 100 caps, and netminder Ben Bowns becoming the most capped GB Netminder.

General Manager Andy Buxton reached a special milestone on Monday with his 100th game in charge of Great Britain.

Buxton’s 100th cap came on the night GB beat Romania 2-1 in overtime to make it two wins from two at the World Championship Division I Group A in Sfântu Gheorghe.

He first took up the role in 2007 in Ljubljana, Slovenia and has been GM ever since, apart from a short stint between 2012 and 2013.

Buxton was part of GB’s gold medal-winning campaigns in Belfast (2017), Hungary (2018) and Nottingham (2023), as well as winning three silver and one bronze medal.

He also led GB at four top-level World Championship tournaments in Slovakia (2019), Latvia (2021), Finland (2022) and Czechia (2024).

Ben Bowns set a new record on Monday night as he became Great Britain’s most-capped netminder of all-time.

Bowns won his 83rd cap in the 2-1 overtime victory against hosts Romania in the World Championship Division I Group A to move one ahead of Stevie Lyle.

Ben has been a regular in the national team since making his debut at the Olympic Qualifiers in Riga in 2013.

Great Britain forward Brett Perlini won his 50th cap in GB’s World Championship Division I Group A match with Romania in Sfântu Gheorghe on Monday.

Perlini made his debut for GB at the 2018 World Championship Division I Group A tournament in Hungary as GB won gold and promotion.

He scored on his debut in a 3-1 victory over Slovenia, as well as netting in the 5-3 win against Poland and twice in the 4-3 success over Italy.

Perlini also helped GB win promotion in the 2023 World Championship Division I Group A in Nottingham scoring three times, including twice in the 5-3 victory over Italy which secured the gold medal.

Great Britain captain Robert Dowd became the seventh player in history to reach the 100-cap milestone when GB faced Japan at the World Championship Division I Group A in Romania.

Dowd joins Mark Richardson, Jonathan Phillips, David Phillips, Matthew Myers, Ashley Tait and David Longstaff to hit the century landmark.

The forward made his World Championship debut in the 2009 Division I Group B tournament in Torun, Poland and scored in just his second game – a 5-2 defeat by Italy. GB went on to win the bronze medal that year with wins over Romania, Netherlands and Poland.

Dowd has since won three gold medals and two sliver, as well a playing at the top level of the World Championship four times.

Jackson Whistle reached 50 caps for Great Britain in Thursday’s game with Italy at the World Championship Division I Group A in Romania.

Whistle becomes the fourth netminder in history to hit the half-century landmark after Ben Bowns, Stevie Lyle and Stephen Murphy.

His first tournament was the 2018 World Championship Division I Group A in Budapest where GB won the gold medal and promotion to the top level.

Whistle was also part of the gold medal-winning team in Nottingham in 2023 and has been part of four top-flight World Championship tournaments in Slovakia (2019), Latvia (2021), Finland (2022) and Czechia (2024).
