Women’s Olympic Qualifiers: Great Britain 5-0 Iceland

Great Britain Women began their Olympic Qualifying campaign with a 5-0 victory over Iceland Women at the National Ice Centre.

GB scored three times on the powerplay while netminders Nicole Jackson and Ella Howard both contributed towards the shutout.

Five players made their debut with first caps for Charlotte Harris, who became the 134th player to represent GB, Howard (135), Chamonix Jackson (136), Ellie Wakeling (137) and Isabell Whiteley (138).

Two-goal first period gives GB great start
Katherine Gale scored on the rebound at 9:39 after Sarah Hutchinson’s shot was saved and GB scored their second just over three minutes later on the powerplay.

Jodie Bloom’s shot from the left circle was saved and Beth Hill was on hand from close range to make it a two-goal game (12:52).

Headland scores in second period as GB take control
Katherine Gale’s sweet feed from behind the net found Aimee Headland to score her third goal on her sixth GB appearance at 31:47.

Bloom and Lucy Beal went close in the second session but GB went to the second intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Allen and Traill secure superb GB win
GB’s fourth came on the powerplay as Katie Marsden’s bullet from the blueline was tipped in by Saffron Allen (44:09).

Head coach Mike Clancy made a change in net at 52:41 as Howard – on her GB debut – replaced Jackson, with both players excelling throughout the night.

Marsden fed Casey Traill for superb one-time finish on the powerplay at 56:37 to complete the victory.

Earlier today, Korea beat Slovenia 3-0 in the tournament’s first game.

GB return to action tomorrow against Slovenia (19:00), with the day’s opening game being Korea against Iceland (14:00).
