GB Women beat Australia to claim bronze

Great Britain Women claimed the bronze medal at the World Championship Division 2 Group A in Gangneung with a 5-3 victory over Australia, who were relegated to Division 2 Group B.

It was a second-successive third place for GB after last year’s bronze medal in Bled.

GB took a two-goal advantage as Ali Emery floated in her first international goal from right point (5:29), while Angela Taylor’s shot was spilled by Australian netminder Michelle Coonan (11:19).

The Aussies then scored either side of the first interval as Sharna Godfrey netted from the slot at 19:29 and Ameila Matheson scored from the point on the powerplay (21:35).

Katie Marsden scored at 24:23 after a great toe-drag, but Australia hit back again to level at 28:54 when Matheson floated in her second goal on the powerplay.

Katie Henry’s finish on the rebound made it 4-3 at 44:18 and Taylor touched in her second to secure victory for GB (58:50).

Head coach, Cheryl Smith, said: “We are content right now and happy with the bronze, but we know it could’ve been better.

“We came for gold and are disappointed we did not get it, but credit to the team for battling back.

“They could’ve crumbled by the regrouped and battled back and worked hard to claim the bronze.”

Earlier in the day, Korea won gold with victory over Netherlands who had to settle for silver.
