GB Women 8-1 New Zealand Women

Great Britain Women began their World Championship campaign with a stunning 8-1 victory over New Zealand Women at the Dumfries Ice Bowl.

Katie Henry scored a hat-trick, Louise Adams netted twice and Nicole Jackson turned away 31 of the 32 shots she faced.

GB took the lead when Henry skated from left to right and fired past Grace Harrison at 1:36.

Great Britain then superbly killed off two minutes of a five-on-three penalty, before Chrissy Newman’s backhand on the doorstep made it 2-0 at 5:46.

Louise Adams grabbed a third (7:03) to give GB a three-goal first-period lead and she netted her second top shelf at 35:00.

The fifth goal arrived only 39 seconds later when a two-on-one break saw Leanne Ganney convert from Beth Scoon’s pass (35:39).

Anjali Thakker’s finish on the doorstep got New Zealand on the board at 44:20 but GB hit back through Saffron Allen only 53 seconds later (45:13).

Henry completed her treble with a wonder goal at 50:18 and a neat finish from the left circle at 54:09.

Coach Cheryl Smith said: “We really needed to go out there and put our mark down – and we did.

“We asked the girls to go out hard every single shift and they gave us exactly that.

“The early goal allowed the girls to settle and get away any nerves they had.

“I think we commanded the game and the scoreline relects that.”

The first day began with Poland beating Croatia 10-3, followed by a 2-0 victory for Kazakhstan over Korea.

GB return to action tomorrow night with a game against Korea.
