GB Women 1-3 Korea Women

Great Britain Women put in a spirited performance but a late third-period goal saw Korea skate to a 3-1 victory in the IIHF World Championship Division 2 Group A.

Player-of-the-game Nicole Jackson turned away 35 of the 38 shots she faced, but GB were beaten for the second time in Gangneung.

Park Jongah finished off a swift break to put Korea ahead at 15:55 and Han Soo Jin’s burst of speed made it 2-0.

GB produced a fantastic second period and Leanne Ganney scored her second goal of the tournament as she broke into the zone after great work from Kimberley Lane (24:07).

Chrissie Newman was denied on the breakaway as GB turned up the pressure, while Angela Taylor was denied by the bar early in the third period.

Jackson continued to make a string of fantastic saves to keep Britain in the game, but Kim Heewon’s wraparound sewed up the game at (54:43).

Head coach, Cheryl Smith, said: “There are huge things to take from today’s game. The biggest thing we needed to do was to control our defensive zone after the performance against Netherlands.

“There isn’t a single player who would disagree with that. We worked hard on that in training and we owned our defensive zone.

“We just didn’t get the breaks. The game flowed. The referee was superb and it flowed both ways.

“It was a very good performance from the girls and we have got a lot to be proud of.”

GB have no game tomorrow before facing DPR Korea on Wednesday.
