GB U16s to take part in Spring Classic

Great Britain Under-16s will take part in the Spring Classic in Swindon at the end of April.

The EIHA-run seven-team tournament will also feature the U17 sides from all four Conferences, plus Okangan UK and Okanagan Europe – and will run from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th April at the Better Link Centre, Swindon.

Great Britain U16 head coach, Steven Lynch, said: “This will be an excellent tournament for the youngsters to take part in. There will be quality opposition and the players will be severely tested.

“It will be good to see players in a game situation and it will be a big part of their learning curve.

“The U16 coaches are looking forward to working with our roster in Swindon for this tournament.”

The title sponsors of the weekend are Warrior Hockey UK.

EIHA Junior League Management Committee (JLMC) chair, Jacqueline Pye, said: “We’re delighted to be able to host a tournament for our top-age Conference squads using the formula set down with the Conference Series and Winter Classic.

“This will give the players more ice time together, playing more games against better players which can only aid their development.

“This tournament will also be an excellent showcase for our top-age players. We’re grateful to Okanagan UK and Europe for buying in to the concept and agreeing to provide teams for the weekend.

“Getting Great Britain U16s is also a fantastic coup. The JLMC are pleased to be able to assist IHUK and provide an opportunity for our youngest GB national team to play competitive games.

“Swindon’s Link Centre have been brilliant to deal with as we have made the arrangements and our title sponsors Warrior Hockey UK continue to invest in the growth of junior hockey, so I am grateful to Neil and Pauline for their support.”

Neil Stone, for title sponsors Warrior Hockey UK, said: “We believe in a strong junior development system to help the young players reach their potential.

“When Jacqueline and the JLMC told us about the tournament coming to Swindon we were only to happy to give it our backing.

“We look forward to welcoming all players, staff and supporters and hope to enjoy a fantastic weekend of junior ice hockey.”
