First Olympic Qualifying tournament excites Betteridge

Great Britain forward Ollie Betteridge says playing in his first Olympic Qualifying tournament on his home ice in Nottingham will make for a very special occasion.

GB, Hungary, Estonia and Romania will battle it out from Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th February at the Motorpoint Arena, with the winning team going through to final qualifying in August for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Betteridge, who has 12 caps to his name from the past two World Championship tournaments in Hungary and Slovakia, will take part in an Olympic Qualifying tournament for the first time next month.

“There is just something very special about anything connected to the Olympics,” said the 24-year-old Nottingham Panthers forward.

“I am really looking forward to the weekend and getting to do it on home ice in Nottingham makes it that extra bit special.

“Pulling on the GB shirt has always been a dream of mine and I am so honoured to be doing it once again in such a prestigious tournament.”

GB start the tournament against Romania on Thursday 6th February, before facing Estonia on Saturday 8th February and Hungary in the tournament’s final game on Sunday 9th February.

“Make no mistake about it, this will be a tough tournament,” added Betteridge. “No game at international level is ever straightforward.

“It may be a cliché but we will have to take a game at a time. We know less about Romania and Estonia as we haven’t played either side for at least a couple of years.

“Hungary, of course, we have seen more recently in the World Championship in 2018 and in a friendly last year and we know how tough they can be.”
