Richardson: This team never ceases to amaze me

Defenceman Mark Richardson says Great Britain “never cease to amaze” after a stunning third-period comeback secured a point against Norway in the IIHF World Championship in Tampere.

GB came from 3-0 down with three goals in just over three minutes in the third period to tie the game, before losing on penalty shots.

Richardson scored GB’s equaliser with under four minutes remaining following a perfect pass from Brett Perlini.

“This team never ceases to amaze,” said Richardson. “We didn’t have a great first period and it wasn’t good enough.

“Second period was a lot better and then third period, what a performance.

“Going back a few years I don’t think anyone thought we’d be where we are, but that’s down to everyone involved.

“The hard work, the dedication and we just have to keep improving.”

Two goals in 38 seconds from Robert Dowd and Perlini was followed by Richardson’s equaliser as GB roared back in the closing stages of the third period.

“We came out in third and did the things we wanted to do from the start,” continued Richardson.

“We had great goaltending from Bownsy and the guys grew in confidence. When that first one went in there was a feeling that we can do this.

“That’s the thing about this team, we got it back and got the point but overall we’re disappointed.

“There’s a lot of things we can learn about from the game and as we talk about, it’s a process and we have to take it forward.”

There’s no action for GB tomorrow but they return to action on Tuesday when they face Sweden at 20:20 (18:20 UK time).
