Myers becomes fourth GB player to reach 100 caps

Forward Matthew Myers was presented with his 100th Great Britain cap ahead of this afternoon’s game with Sweden in the World Championship.

Myers will also captain his country on the very special occasion as he becomes only the fourth player in history to reach the milestone after Ashely Tait (110), David Longstaff (101) and Jonathan Phillips (101), who reached a century of caps against Denmark.

This is his 17th World Championship – and he has also played in five Olympic Qualifiers – and he made his debut in the 2004 World Championship Division I Group A in Oslo, Norway.

Myers was presented with his cap in a special ceremony before the game against Sweden, led by GB General Manager Andy Buxton and Ice Hockey UK General Secretary Andy French.

He was also handed his number 8 shirt with the ‘C’ in a surprise presentation by long-time team-mate and friend Jonathan Phillips.

“It’s very special to reach 100 caps and I’m so honoured to reach the milestone,” said Myers. “To also be captain this afternoon is truly humbling.

“We have a fantastic group of guys and to share this moment with them is something I will always treasure.

“I have some great memories of playing for the national team and I want us to create some more.”

Andy Buxton said: “To get to 100 caps takes real dedication, professionalism and a huge commitment to the jersey.

“I don’t think anyone could argue that Matthew has all of these qualities in abundance and thoroughly deserves to reach such a special milestone.

“You only have to look at the way he played on his 99th appearance to see that wearing a Great Britain jersey means as much to him now as it did when he wore one for the first time.

“His 100th today will be absolutely no different and I would like to thank him for his incredible service to the Great Britain team.”
