GB Women Reduce Squad Ahead Of Tournament

Great Britain Women have named a squad of 23 players ahead of the upcoming World Championship in Dumfries, Scotland.

The six-team Division 2A tournament, which involves GB, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Korea, New Zealand and Poland, runs from 30th March to 5th April.

GB just missed out on gold and promotion last season, winning the silver medal in Asiago, Italy.

The squad met at the weekend and had an on-ice camp in Sheffield, along with a fitness training day off the ice at the University of Gloucester.

A decision will be made on the final squad of 22 for the IIHF tournament after the camp next month.

Coach Cheryl Smith said: “We feel we have a good group of players who are very focused about the task in hand.

“We came so close last year in Asiago but we can build on that and take the positives from how well we did.

“It was a tough selection process and the girls have worked so hard throughout the year – and I know they can’t wait to represent GB in their own country.”

Coach Michelle Smith added: “Competition for places was fierce and the camp last weekend was excellent.

“The commitment shown by all the girls over the last few months has been top class.

“There is no bigger honour than representing your own country and to do it on home ice is going to be very special for everyone involved.”
