Tait Bursting With Pride

Forward Ashley Tait says he is bursting with pride to be involved in the Great Britain set-up once again.

GB begin their bid to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in the pre-qualifying tournament in Cortina this week.

Pete Russell’s side start the four-team Group G with a game against Netherlands on Thursday, followed by Serbia on Saturday and hosts Italy on Sunday.

Tait is Great Britain’s most-capped player with 102 to his name, but did not feature in last year’s World Championship in Netherlands.

The 40-year-old, who first featured for his country in 1995, said: “I am so excited to be pulling on a GB shirt again in such an important tournament.

“You can’t beat that special feeling and I feel as proud now as I did when I won my first GB cap.

“Olympic tournaments make it that extra bit special too.

“There is a great feeling in the camp which is great to see and we have a squad who will give their all in every shift over the coming days.”

It’s 80 years since GB famously won gold in 1936 Winter Olympics in Germany, but the nation has not qualified since 1948.

And the history made by his predecessors all those years ago is not lost on the forward.

“It is amazing to think GB won gold in 1936 and it does inspire you,” continued Tait.

“Obviously we are a long way from qualifying for a Winter Olympics with two rounds to negotiate, but it does get your pulses racing.

“We have to take each game as it comes and if we get through this stage, we come up against some seriously quality nations in the final qualifying.

“That is way into the distance at the moment but it drives you and is an exciting thought.”
