Great Britain Under-18s 3-2 Romania Under-18s (after overtime)

Great Britain came from behind to beat Romania 3-2 in overtime at the IIHF Under-18 World Championship Division II Group A in Tallinn.

Mack Stewart scored 37 seconds into the extra period to secure GB the extra point.

Liam Steele made his first appearance of the tournament after missing training camp and the opening game against Estonia following a positive covid test.

Ben Norton got his second successive start in goal while Luca Tessadri, who has replaced the injured Alex Oldale, was back-up.

Romania took the lead after only 92 seconds when Akos Nyisztor fired high on Norton on a breakaway (1:32) and Akos Molnar made it two on the powerplay (8:50).

Kell Beattie reduced the deficit with the man advantage early in the second period as he tipped in Archie Hazeldine’s shot (21:11) and less than three minutes later it was a tied game, with Austin Osborn sweeping in a loose puck (24:06).

A scoreless third period followed and Stewart was the game-winner in the extra period as he put away his own rebound (60:37).

Head Coach, Sean Easton, said: “Again, a slow started cost us the full three points. Being second to pucks and sloppy play on the puck led to us being two goals down at the end of the first break.
“In the second and third period we turned up and started to skate and play hard on the puck.

“We dominated the second and third and found our way back into the game at the 25-minute mark. We have to be a lot better tomorrow when we face Korea.”

It means GB have two points from their opening two matches following Sunday’s 3-2 defeat by Estonia.

GB are straight back into action tomorrow as they face Korea at 10:30am UK time.
