GB Women unveil team that would’ve gone to this month’s World Championship

Great Britain Women have unveiled their team that would’ve gone to the World Championship Division II Group A in Jaca later this month.

GB were set to compete against hosts Spain, as well as Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, Latvia and Mexico, in the six-team tournament.

The IIHF announced earlier this month that the tournament was one of a number to be cancelled because of the coronavirus.

Head coach, Cheryl Smith, said: “The 22 players and two reserves bust a gut to get into the World Championship squad and they deserve to be recognised.

“It was devastating for them to have the tournament cancelled, but we all totally understand the reasons behind it.

“The coaching staff had already named the team and told the girls – and then we heard about the tournament being cancelled.

“Being named in any type of GB squad is a very special honour, no matter what level you play at. Putting on that GB shirt is one of the most proudest things you can do in the sport.

“These players sacrificed a lot this year – and worked so hard – so we feel it is only right they should get the recognition for it.”
