Farmer: GB competition for places is fierce

Forward Robert Farmer says competition to make the final roster for the World Championship in Budapest is very fierce amongst the Great Britain players.

GB will prepare for the Division 1 Group A tournament with two games against Lithuania next month.

The two sides meet in Milton Keynes on Saturday 14th April (7pm) and again the following day on Sunday 15th April in Coventry’s Skydome (5:15pm).

“Every year the task of making the final roster gets tougher and tougher,” said the Nottingham Panthers forward.

“We have a great mix of experienced and young talent in the country at the moment and no-one is assured of their place.

“This season’s tournament will by very special now we are in the second tier and we will come up against some top teams.

“Competition amongst the lads will be fierce and everyone has that ultimate goal of making the plane for Budapest.”

The six-team World Championship runs from 22nd to 28th April 2018 and will take place at the Papp Laszlo Sportarena in Budapest.

GB will come up against hosts Hungary, along with Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland and Slovenia, with two teams promoted to the top-level World Championship.

But before that, Britain will go head-to-head in what is set to be two titanic battles with Lithuania and Farmer believes it will provide the squad with a good test.

“Apart from the one year in Croatia, games between us and Lithuania are always close,” he added.

“We have got the upper hand in the last couple of games but it hasn’t always been like that. They were our bogey side for a couple of years.

“We always get great support on home ice and these two games are ones the guys really looking forward to playing in.”
