‘Competition for places is tougher than ever’ for GB Women

Great Britain Women held a camp in Sheffield at the weekend as they stepped up their preparations for next year’s World Championship.

The training camp included intense on and off-ice sessions at the Bauer Arena at Ice Sheffield last Sunday.

GB Women will travel to Mairbor for their Division II Group A tournament which runs from 31st March to 6th April 2018.

Their quest for promotion will see them come up against hosts Slovenia, along with Australia, DPR Korea, Mexico and the Netherlands.

Head coach, Cheryl Smith, said: “It was a fantastic camp and the coaching staff were thrilled with what they saw on and off the ice.

“Competition for places is tougher than ever and that is great to see.

“In previous years the squad has almost picked itself bar a handful of places, but there is competition all across the ice this season.”

Assistant coach, James Ashton, added: “The players looked in good condition off the ice and sharp on the ice.

“We will get this group of players together now a number of times before April and the coaching staff are very much looking forward to spending time with this squad.”
