GB To Face Poland

Great Britain Men will renew their rivalry with Poland next year as the sides will play two international matches ahead of their respective World Championship tournaments.

The National Ice Centre in Nottingham will be the venue for the first game on Saturday 9th April 2016, with the two sides also going head-to-head at Coventry’s Skydome the next afternoon, Sunday 10th April 2016 (5:15pm).

GB and Poland met at the same venues last season, with the hosts running out 6-4 winners in Nottingham and 3-1 in Coventry.

Last season’s clashes were played in front of large crowds at both venues and continued the tradition of thrilling matches between the two hockey nations.

Tickets for the two matches go on sale on Monday (21st September) morning at 9am.

Poland came close to promotion to the World Championship elite level last season, while GB won silver and just missed out on promotion to Division 1A with a heartbreaking final-day defeat by Lithuania in Netherlands.

GB general manager, Andy Buxton, said: “The two games last season were some of the best games and best atmospheres that I have ever seen at games in the UK. They were such a success that both countries were very keen to repeat the games again and we are delighted that we’ve been able to make it happen.”

Councillor Abdul Khan, cabinet member for sport in Coventry said: “It’s fantastic news that we will once again be hosting an international game in Coventry. Ice hockey is very well supported in the city and last time we hosted a game like this it was played in front of a packed house. Part of our sports strategy is about encouraging top-class sport in the city, because we know that this encourages people to take part in sport themselves and lead active, healthier lifestyles.

“We look forward to welcoming the Polish team and their supporters to Coventry again next year.”

National Ice Centre chief executive, Geoff Huckstep, said: “It is fantastic to be holding a top-class international game in Nottingham again. Last year’s game was fantastic and really well received and we are looking forward to welcoming GB and Poland once again to the city and arena.”

Ice Hockey UK general secretary, Andy French, added: “It is brilliant news that Poland are coming over again for two more matches next year.

“We have a rivalry built on respect but the players give it everything on the ice – and the two games last year showed how much it means to them.

“We look forward to welcoming our friends from Poland over again for what I am sure will be two thrilling games of hockey.”

Tickets have been held at last season’s prices and once again there will be a special discounted early-bird window.
